What is the Therapeutic Shoe Bill?
The Therapeutic Shoe Bill is an extended coverage to diabetics for footwear and inserts. 54,000 diabetic amputations occur each year. Protective footwear is an important part of preventing many amputations.

Who qualifies?
Less than 6% of those who qualify know about this program. Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill generally applies to diabetics over the age of 65, however, there are a number of exceptions. You must have Medicare Part B coverage to qualify.

What is covered?
Coverage is limited to I pair of diabetic shoes and up to 3 pair of heat molded multi-density inserts per year. Coverage is limited to shoes and inserts meeting certain requirements. Co-pay may be required. Ask a Shoes That Fit representative for more information.

Medicare Coverage
If you suffer from diabetes your footwear and insert may be covered by Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill. The Shoe Bill was created to help prevent life threatening complications and amputations.
In order to benefit from this program you must have Medicare Part B coverage. Your Medicare deductible must also be met for the current year.
You must have a statement from the physician who treats and manages your diabetes. We can provide you with the appropriate form for your physician to complete and sign.

This statement should say the following:
- You have diabetes.
- Your treatment requires therapeutic shoes and inserts.
Under the Shoe Bill, Therapeutic Shoes must be supplied and fitted by a podiatrist, pedorthist or other qualified individual. We carry footwear that is covered by the Therapeutic Shoe Bill and we can bill Medicare for you.

- See your physician regularly and be sure to have your feet examined during each visit.
- Inspect your feet daily for wounds. Always check between your toes.
- Wash your feet daily and dry them carefully.
- Avoid extreme hot or cold. Test water with your hands or elbow before you bath.
- Inspect the insides of your shoes for foreign objects and rough areas that could cause blisters.
- Wear socks if your feet get cold in the evening.
- Wear socks that are seamless and are made for diabetics.
Do's
- Do not walk barefoot
- Do not soak your feet in hot water.
- Do not wear mended socks and avoid socks with seams.
- Do not use oil or cream between your toes.
- Do not wear thong sandals.
- Do not use chemical agents to remove corns or calluses.
- Do not cut corns or calluses yourself, see a physician.
- Do not cross your legs. This can cause pressure on the nerves and blood vessels.
