About Shoes That Fit

The Shoes that Fit founders, Kip and Heidi Odermatt started their company with one simple idea: Before a salesperson recommends a shoe, he (or she) should first look at the feet. Because the most basic service that a salesperson can give is fitting shoes properly, their goal is to measure every customer’s feet, both feet, because no two are exactly alike.

Size and width are important but not all that matters. Finding the right fit also requires some knowledge of the different foot types as well. Are your feet flexible or rigid? Do you have a high arch or low? Do you walk on the outside of your feet or the inside? All of this information can be helpful when selecting the perfect style for your foot type, gait and lifestyle. That’s why the staff at Shoes that Fit are trained in the basics of Pedorthics, the study of manufacturing, fitting and modifying shoes and inserts to accommodate specific foot types and fitting problems.

Shoes don’t have to be ugly to be comfortable and good for your feet. Shoes that Fit buyers travel the world looking for fashionable shoes that are actually made in a way so that they can support, stabilize, cushion and allow proper function of your feet while walking. When the shoes allow your feet to function well, your feet can be more comfortable and healthier.

Whether for dress, work or play your performance and enjoyment will be enhanced when you feel good. And when your feet feel good you’ll feel better so get into Shoes that Fit.

  • Unbeatable Service

“Shoes that Fit” is a local, family owned shoe company with locations in Modesto and Elk Grove. We carry a large selection of the world’s best quality comfortable shoes. What makes them comfortable? It starts with the quality of the materials and style constructions. The anatomical shape of the last, which determines the shape of the upper, and the contoured footbed, for support, are also important parts of what makes a shoe comfortable. But ultimately the most important component for making a shoe comfortable is how it is fit.

That’s why our staff members are trained, in proper shoe fitting, by Certified Pedortists , (C.Ped) and Certified Fitters of Therapeutic Shoes (CFts.) All of our retail shoe fitters are trained to provide a free foot assessment, which includes measuring both feet, before any shoes are recommended for sale. For further analysis the store has available the latest computer foot scanning technologies for pressure points and plantar (bottom of the foot) surface topographical screenings. These routine foot assessments are offered for free so that the professional shoe fitters have enough information to help in the correct footwear selection whether your need is for work, sports, dress or any of our huge array of function specific footwear.

There is no extra charge for our ultimate level of shoe fitting service. We just think that it is the right way to sell shoes. After all, what more important service can a shoe store provide than fitting the shoes correctly?

  • Digitized Foot Scan

Aetrex’s iStep SP5000 is the most revolutionary digital foot analysis device ever created and iStep tests are recommended for all people who want to feel great on their feet.  In less than 30 seconds the iStep will capture your foot type, pressure points and shoe size and then help recommend the ideal footwear and orthotics for your individual needs.Video about the iStep

This patented technology features 3,744 Gold plated barometric sensors that measure the pressure exerted by your foot every .25 cm(2).  The high concentration of sensors allows the device to perform a precise reading, even for a small child.  Amazingly, this compact device also incorporates 1,326 infrared LEDs and Receptors that are aligned every half millimeter to ensure unmatched accuracy when measuring your foot. Images can be viewed in two or three dimensions and tests can be done in either static or dynamic format.

  • Certified and Trained Pedorthists and Shoe Fitters

A Certified Pedorthist or C.Ped. is a specialist in using footwear, which includes shoes, foot orthoses and other pedorthic devices to solve problems in or related to the feet. When a foot requires medical attention, footwear becomes a factor in the patient's treatment, recovery or rehabilitation. While the doctor treats your foot, the C.Ped. addresses your footwear needs. They select and modify footwear to help people maintain or regain as much mobility as possible. When a standard shoe won't accommodate an individual's needs, a C.Ped. can recommend a different type or style. Working from a doctor's prescription, a C.Ped. alleviates foot problems by modifying shoes and foot orthoses. Once the shoes and/or orthoses meet the prescription's requirements, the C.Ped. carefully fits them. Follow-up care is essential to assure the shoe/orthosis continues to perform as prescribed.

54,000 diabetic amputations occur each year. Protective footwear is an important part of preventing many amputations. If you suffer from diabetes your footwear may be covered by Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill. The Therapeutic Shoe Bill is an extended coverage to diabetics for footwear and inserts. Less than 6% of those who qualify know about this program. Medicare's Therapeutic Shoe Bill generally applies to diabetics over the age of 65. You must have Medicare Part B coverage to qualify. Coverage is limited to 1 pair of diabetic shoes and up to 3 pairs of heat molded multi-density inserts per year. Under the Shoe Bill, Therapeutic Shoes must be supplied and fitted by a Podiatrist, Pedorthist or other qualified individual. Shoes That Fit employs two Board Certified Pedorthists and a staff that receives extensive training in proper fitting, foot pathology and problem analysis, knowledge on proper shoe selection, quality, sizing and comfort features that are most appropriate for diabetics.

The study of pedorthics requires knowledge of anatomy, pathology, biometrics which involves human locomotion, gait analysis, innersole, physiotherapy and other related jobs.

  • Custom Orthotics

In your lifetime you will walk over 100,000 miles, equivalent to walking around the world more than 3.5 times. The benefits of caring for your feet with custom orthotics are well understood and can often provide many additional years of comfortable walking and improve bio mechanical health.

Perfect-fitting foot orthotics. Amfit’s Digitizer measures the entire plantar surface of the foot giving you precise data to make the best foot orthotics.

A custom orthotic is a supportive device that is specifically made to fit each individual foot. When properly fit in your shoes, the orthotic acts as an interface between the foot, the shoes and the ground. There are various methods of making orthotics and results can vary depending on the methods and material used. These custom orthotics are designed for the best fit.

    What Does An Orthotic Do?

    • Custom orthotics support the foot and ankle while standing and walking, giving you improved balance, alignment, performance and confidence any time you are on your feet.
    • Custom orthotics allow more equal weight distribution relieving undesirable stressed across the under surface of the foot associated with foot pain and discomfort. Balancing the foot is the first step to increased comfort.
    • With professional recommendations orthotics can provide a change in foot function, helping you better compensate for abnormalities and help certain foot conditions from getting worse.
    • Custom orthotics provide superior shock absorption in addition to controlling the heel at heel strike when walking or running. The combination makes it a joy to walk, run and participate in all of your favorite activities.
